Slim·Fast® is a brand of shakes, bars, snacks, packaged meals, and other dietary supplement foods sold in the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Canada, France, Germany, Iceland, the Netherlands, and Latin America by Unilever. Slim·Fast® promotes diets and weight loss plans featuring its food products.

Slim·Fast® was started in 1977 by S. Daniel Abraham as part of the Thompson Medical Group. In 1987, Abraham took the brand private, and it was acquired by Unilever in 2000.

Slim·Fast® struggled, as did many diet foods in 2002 with the rise of low-carb diets, with a drop in sales during one year of 21 percent. The brand responded in 2004 with a line of low-carb items that were designed to capture this market and also introduced Slim-Fast Optima products which were lower in sugar than the standard Slim·Fast® products.

Slim·Fast® used the phrase “a shake for breakfast, a shake for lunch, then a sensible dinner” for many years to describe the use of the products within the Slim·Fast® plan. With the addition of snacks and an approach that allows for different calorie plans, the brand now advocates a more flexible system. The brand has recently become focused on achieving success through tying its use to the Best Life Diet. There is evidence from a 2003 study that Slim-Fast is successful at achieving long-term weight loss for those that follow the diet.

Pepperidge Farm founder Margaret Rudkin was one of the great business leaders of her time. She was born Margaret Fogarty in New York City in 1897, the oldest of five children in a second-generation Irish family. A striking young woman with bright red hair and green eyes, Margaret graduated valedictorian of her high school class, and then spent nine years working in New York before marrying Wall Street Broker Henry Rudkin in 1923.

Fourteen years later, Margaret was a 40-year-old-mother of three young sons, living in Fairfield, Connecticut on a beautiful property called Pepperidge Farm—named for an ancient Pepperidge tree that grew there. The Rudkins had moved into Pepperidge Farm in 1929—the same year as the great Stock Market Crash. The Rudkins faced many challenges during the Great Depression—but as parents, one of the most difficult challenges was dealing with the severe allergies and asthma of their youngest son, whose condition made him unable to eat most commercially processed foods.

Based on the advice of a specialist, Margaret put him on a diet of fruits and vegetables and minimally processed foods. Then one day Margaret decided to try baking him some all-natural stone ground whole wheat bread with vitamins and nutrients intact. At a time when puffy, aerated white bread dominated the market, many skeptics—including her son’s doctor—didn’t think it was possible to bake nutritious bread that was also delicious. Margaret proved them wrong.

Having never baked bread before in her life, Margaret’s early progress was slow. “My first loaf should have been sent to the Smithsonian Institution as a sample of Stone Age bread, for it was hard as a rock and about one inch high,” Margaret quipped. “So I started over again, and after a few more efforts by trial and error, we achieved what seemed like good bread.”

They have a large plant in the town of Framingham, Massachusetts, outside Boston.

For years Breyers was known for its short, all-natural ingredients list. This featured prominently in an advertising campaign where a child would attempt to read the ingredients from another brand, experiencing extreme difficulty pronouncing the artificial additives. He then turned to the Breyers list and quickly rattled off the four ingredients (in their vanilla at the time): milk, cream, sugar, and vanilla. In recent years as part of cost cutting measures since the acquisition by Unilever, the list has expanded to include: Tara gum, Guar gum, ice-structuring proteins, mono and diglycerides, corn-syrup, and whey sourced from meat-based rennet. As a result of the use of whey, Breyers All Natural Ice Cream is no longer acceptable for vegetarians. Additionally, the carton size has shrunk from the classic half-gallon to one-and-a-half quarts.

Breyers is sometimes confused with Dreyer’s, a Nestle brand. While William Breyer founded his ice cream on the east coast, another man, William Dreyer, founded an ice cream company on the west coast. As the two brands increased their reach across the country, a similarity of name issue was inevitable. In 1981, Dreyer’s made the decision not to sell Dreyer’s branded products in the east. In an agreement with Breyers, Dreyer’s sought to market its product east of the Rocky Mountains under the “Edy’s Grand” name. However, Breyers made no similar reciprocal agreement, and by the mid-1980s began to distribute Breyers ice cream to states throughout the midwestern and western United States. As a result, both Breyers and Dreyer’s can be found on grocery shelves in western states.

The company was founded in 1888, in Sebastopol, California, as the Hunt Bros. Fruit Packing Co. by Joseph and William Hunt. The brothers relocated to nearby Santa Rosa in 1890, and then to Hayward in 1895. This small canning operation grew rapidly, focused on canning the products of California’s booming fruit and vegetable industries.

In 1943, Hunt’s was taken over by Norton Simon’s Val Vita Food Products – a competing firm founded in the early 1930s. The merged firm kept the Hunt’s name and incorporated as Hunt Foods, Inc. The new management decided to focus the company on canned tomato products, particularly prepared tomato sauce.

Hunt’s later merged with Wesson (producer of cooking oil) to form Hunt-Wesson Foods, which later merged with Beatrice Foods. The brand was sold to ConAgra along with many other former Beatrice brands in 1990.

Besides canned tomato sauce, the Hunt’s brand appears on tomato paste, diced, whole, stewed, and crushed tomatoes, spaghetti sauce, ketchup, barbecue sauce, and their Family Favorites line of canned recipe helpers. It also is the brand name appearing on ConAgra’s Manwich brand sloppy joes products as well as Hunt’s Snack Pack Pudding.

Founded in 1853, it has produced numerous baked snacks. Keebler has marketed its brands such as Cheez-Its (which have the Sunshine Biscuits brand), Chips Deluxe, Club Crackers, E.L. Fudge Cookies, Famous Amos Cookies, Fudge Shoppe Cookies, Murray, Austin, Plantation, Vienna Fingers, Town House Crackers, Wheatables, Sandie’s Shortbread, and Zesta Crackers, among others.

Godfrey Keebler opened a bakery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1853. In 1927, this bakery and others formed the United Biscuit Company, which at one point was headquartered in West Drayton, Middlesex, England.

Keebler-Wyl Bakery became the official baker of Girl Scout Cookies in 1936, the first commercial company to bake the cookies (the scouts and their mothers had done it previously). By 1978, four companies were producing the cookies. Little Brownie Bakers is the Keebler division still licensed to produce the cookies.

In March 2001, The Keebler Company was acquired by the Kellogg Company. At that time, headquarters were based in Elmhurst, Illinois.

The animated Keebler Elves, led by Ernie Keebler, rank among the most best-known characters from commercials. The elves have appeared in countless television advertisements throughout the years, shown baking their unique products. The Keebler tree logo reflects this characterization.

Burnett’s company created the elves in 1968, calling the bakery “The Hollow Tree Factory.”

J.J. Keebler was the “blustery” original head elf in 1960, followed by “wisecracking” golf enthusiast Ollie. Ernie became “head elf” in 1968.

White-haired Ernie wore a green jacket, a white shirt with a yellow tie, a red vest, and yellow socks.

Other elves were Fryer Tuck (who promoted “Munch-ems”), Zoot and J.J. (known for Pizzarias), Ernie’s mother Ma Keebler, young Elmer Keebler, Buckets (who threw fudge on the cookies), Fast Eddie (who wrapped the products), Sam (the peanut butter baker), Roger (the jeweler), Doc (the doctor and cookie maker), Zack (the fudge shoppe supervisor), Flo (the accountant), Leonardo (the artist), Elwood (who ran through the dough) and Professor, Edison, Larry and Art.

The brand is owned by the Campbell Soup Company.

The original V8 is made mainly from tomatoes and the juices from seven additional vegetables, specifically: beets, celery, carrots, lettuce, parsley, watercress, and spinach. Tomato juice composes around 87% of the total drink. Campbell’s makes several varieties of the drink, such as Original, Spicy, Lemon, Picante, Low-Sodium, and Organic.

Two spinoffs of the V8 brand, “V8 Splash”, and “V8 V Fusion”, are blends of fruit and vegetable (specifically carrot) juices. V8 Splash is sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup or Splenda, while V Fusion is made from 100% juice and contains a daily serving of both fruits and vegetables per 8oz glass.

The V8 brand’s commitment to innovation has led to the development of many new products that meet consumers’ changing taste, health and lifestyle needs. “For 75 years, V8 juice has been helping people to live healthful, balanced lifestyles by providing convenient vegetable nutrition,” said Darren Serrao, Vice President, Beverages, Campbell Soup Company. “Our mission is to continue making it more enjoyable for people to get the vegetables they need.”

The original V8 100% Vegetable Juice on shelves today includes the same eight vegetable juices it did in 1933: tomatoes, carrots, celery, beets, parsley, lettuce, watercress and spinach. In 2007, as part of Campbell’s commitment to health and wellness, original V8 100% juice was reformulated to address one of today’s most pressing health concerns – heart disease. The sodium content in V8 100% juice was reduced by 19 percent, making it heart-healthy.

Over the last 75 years, the product lineup has grown to include more than 20 varieties, from twists on the traditional “red juice” such as Low Sodium V8 and Spicy Hot V8, to unique fruit and vegetable juice blends. In fact, Campbell found many consumers wanted a convenient way to get more vegetables in their diet but preferred a “sweeter” taste, so its product innovation team worked to create a solution. In 2006, Campbell introduced V8 V-Fusion® juice – which delivers vegetable nutrition that tastes like fruit and offers a full serving (half cup) of fruit and a full serving (half cup) of vegetables in every 8-ounce glass. Like the original juices, V8 V-Fusion is 100% juice and is available in several varieties including unique on-trend flavors such as Acai Mixed Berry, Pomegranate Blueberry, Strawberry Banana and Peach Mango.

In 1900 in Chicago, Oscar Mayer leased the Kolling Meat Market along with his brother, Gottfried Mayer. The two sold bratwurst, liverwurst, and weißwurst and were popular in the predominantly German neighborhoods of Chicago around the market.

As the meat market’s popularity grew, it expanded its storefront and sponsored local events including the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. By 1900 the company had 43 employees and Chicago-wide delivery service. In 1904 Oscar Mayer began branding its meats to capitalize on their popularity, beginning an industry-wide trend. In 1906 Oscar Mayer became one of the first companies to voluntarily submit to the newly-created Food Safety Inspection Service (part of the United States Department of Agriculture) for testing the purity of their products.

Oscar Mayer is also famous for their Wienermobile, which has toured the United States for over 70 years. The first Wienermobile was created in 1936, and six have since been built.

In 2007, the company was subject to an email hoax which claimed that Oscar Mayer did not support the United States military.
