Tide is the name of a popular laundry detergent on the market in Canada, the United States and other countries. It is manufactured by Procter & Gamble.

Tide is marketed under various sub-brands, such as 2x Ultra Tide. First introduced in test markets in 1946 with national distribution reached in 1949, Tide was voted as “America’s Washday Favorite”. It quickly gained dominance in the detergent market, dwarfing the sales of other P&G products, such as Ivory Snow, as well as the competition from Rinso. The latter two were soap powders and flakes. In the late sixties and early seventies, it was branded as “Tide XK” (The XK standing for Xtra Kleaning), but it was rebranded as Tide later on. Originally, Tide was a white powdered bead, but the brand line was later expanded to include an orange-tinted clear liquid form in 1984. Today, most formulations of liquid Tide are dark blue with the exception of Tide Free, which is clear. An addition to the Tide Family, Tide Cold Water, was formulated to tackle stains while saving energy because it does not require hot or even warm water.Tide is recognized for its distinctive orange-and-yellow bullseye logo. The original logo was designed by Donald Deskey, a famous industrial and identity designer. Tide was the first product to be nationally packaged using Day-Glo colors, strikingly eye-catching when first introduced. The logo people see today is a product of a slight modification for the product’s fiftieth anniversary in 1996. Currently, the Tide brand is given to over half a dozen powders and liquid detergents in the United States alone.

In the 1920s, Americans used soap flakes to clean their laundry. The flakes performed poorly in hard water, leaving a ring in the washing machine, dulling colors, and turning whites gray. Procter & Gamble began an ambitious mission to change the way Americans washed their clothes. Researchers discovered two-part molecules which they called synthetic surfactants. Each part of the “miracle molecules” executed a specific function–one pulled grease and dirt from the clothes, while the other suspended dirt until it could be rinsed away. In 1933, this discovery was introduced in a detergent called “Dreft,” but it could only handle lightly soiled jobs. The next goal was to create a detergent that could clean heavily soiled clothes. That detergent was Tide®.

Created in 1943, Tide detergent was the combination of synthetic surfactants and “builders.” The builders helped the synthetic surfactants penetrate the clothes more deeply to attack greasy, difficult stains. Tide was introduced to test markets in October 1946 as the world’s first heavy-duty detergent. Consumer response was immediate and intense. Tide detergent outsold every other brand within weeks. It became so popular that store owners were forced to limit the quantity purchased per customer.

Tide detergent was improved 22 times during its first 21 years on the market, and Procter & Gable still strives for perfection. Each year, researchers duplicate the mineral content of water from all parts of the United States and wash 50,000 loads of laundry to test Tide detergent’s consistency and performance.

The first Old Spice product, a fragrance called Early American Old Spice for women, was introduced in 1937, closely followed by Old Spice for men in 1938. The Old Spice products were manufactured by the Shulton Company that was founded in 1934 by William Lightfoot Schultz. When Old Spice was introduced, Schultz developed a colonial framework for those products and chose a nautical theme for Old Spice. Thus, sailing ships, in particular colonial sailing ships, were used as a trademark. Procter & Gamble purchased Old Spice from the Shulton Company in June 1990. The clipper ship was replaced by the Sailboat/Yacht logo in the fragrance bottles in February 1992. In the late 2000s, P&G introduced many forms of deodorant sticks, body washes, and body sprays in several scents under the Old Spice brand.

Antiperspirant

Advanced Solid
The finest street-legal antiperspirant you can get. Whether you know it or not, a 24/7 odor and wetness cockfight is going on in your armpits. You have an armpit emergency and must arm yourself with a nuclear-powered antiperspirant. Old Spice Pro Strength antiperspirant is the dam that will prevent massive pit flooding.

Clear Gel
We like to think of this antiperspirant as the Abraham Lincoln of antiperspirant, able to transcend time but remain clear and obvious. If you can follow our little simile, this antiperspirant/deodorant goes on clear but lasts long. We’re not saying Lincoln wore it, but if he were alive today, we think he might.

Ever Clear
Inspired by the same high-level thinking that brought about nude-colored bathing suits worn by international female supermodels, Everclear is an anti-perspirant that you can wear and no one will know. Except for you of course, allowing your self-confidence to rise faster then a condominium tower in Dubai with the knowledge that you smell great and at the same time are not at risk for developing unsightly residue. An occurrence so historically unpleasant and embarrassing that it came to be known in many ancient tribes as “white poo of the demon fox”.

High Performance Solid
If your armpits are in a deep recession, bail them out from wetness and odor with Red Zone High Performance Solid. Export manly smells and import ladies, knowledge and stories you’ll tell your great grandchildren. This deodorant is a straight-shooting policymaker.

Invisible Solid
This is an antiperspirant you will find in the medicine cabinets of haunted houses. That’s because it’s spooky how good it works. It goes on clear, and lasts all day. Don’t be frightened by its manly yet invisible power.

Aerosol Spray
Men like stuff in highly pressurized metal canisters. That’s a fact. That’s because aerosol is mysterious. How do microscopic beads of antiperspirant/deodorant “spray” out of a nozzle, coat your pits and provide long lasting sweat and odor protection? Sometimes it’s best not to ask questions when faced with magic.

Body Spray

Body Spray
Let’s admit it men, we don’t have a lot of tricks up our collective sleeves. Sure, ladyfolk make their skin all sparkly and their hair asymmetrical, but the best we can do is choose a button-up or a sweater. That’s why it’s important to smell great. Old Spice Body Spray enhances handsomeness and commands female attention. And that’s a pretty fancy trick indeed.

Fragrance

After Shave
With a buoy-shaped bottle and distinctive scent, Old Spice After Shave is as American as a man on a motorcycle jumping over a baseball stadium while singing the national anthem. And the only thing despots hate more than decentralized government and free speech is the smell of Old Spice After Shave. So punch totalitarianism in the piehole by splashing on some Old Spice After Shave.

Cologne
Old Spice Cologne has been around for generations. If your grandfather hadn’t worn it, you wouldn’t exist. Neither would velvet paintings, the chili dog and sheepskin rugs — manly things that were made by men who smelled strong and splashed Old Spice cologne on their faces before doing other manly stuff during their day.
